Joy and Laughter

“A Joyful heart is Good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones (Prov 17:22, ESV).”

We have often heard the statement that laughter is good medicine and studies have proven the benefits of laughter in helping patients to heal quickly. So also, is true of prayer for those dealing with cancer and other illnesses who have faith and pray heal faster and recover as oppose to those who doubt and give in to the illness. The Bible reminds us that a joyful heart is good medicine (Prov 17:22). Laughter is a sign of happiness and joy.

The dictionary defines joy as the “emotion evoked by well-being, success, or by prospect of possessing what one desires” and “happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying.” This great emotion of well-being, satisfaction and a deep happiness in our souls is mentioned throughout the Bible for those following God’s ways. We are reminded that joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22) and that the “joy of the Lord is our strength (Neh 8:10).” Romans 14:17 reminds us that the Kingdom of God includes peace and joy in the Holy Spirit!

As we enter this next year, let’s remember that we can rejoice in the Lord (Phil 3:1) no matter what comes our way. We can find joy and satisfaction in Christ no matter the situation. So, consider doing something that you enjoy as you take time off for a weekend (Sabbath Rest), vacation or even a little time each day. By enjoying a hobby, sport, good book or TV show that makes you laugh; you are interacting with the beauty and creativity of God’s creation and remember – “it is good (Gen 1).” Our strength to overcome is from our joy in the Lord – rejoicing in all God has done for us and believing He has only good things for us in the future as we continue to seek Him!

Bring your friends along on your adventure of enjoying life and rejoicing in the Lord! May your joy keep you healthy and strong, ready to take on the challenges of life!
