Reflection on Experiencing God by Blackaby & King

One Bible study that made a big difference in my life occurred when I was in High School. I attended the Bible Study walking through the workbook, Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God by Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V King. In this study, I learned how to hear God’s voice and to look for the clues in my life of what God was doing. I began to realize God had a purpose for my life and I began to seek Him to determine what that purpose was. I have learned to look at the “signposts in my life” – looking to see what God is doing around me and seeing how I can join in His activity. I believe this study helped me begin to seek out my vocation. Originally I thought I was called to become a corporate lawyer and to help defend churches from law suits. I knew I was called to minister in the church, but thought it would be more like a part-time bi-vocational thing. Later I began to see that God was calling me to be a spiritual mother in the church, to mentor others and help them discover their purpose in life. Instead of going on to law school after college, I got married and went to Seminary. I got involved in children’s ministry and was a children’s pastor for over ten years for many small churches.

In 2012 I was asked to take on another ministry role and took charge of creating a prayer ministry for the church where I attended. Things came back full circle reminding me of the importance of prayer and seeking God for direction. The Lord has now called me to take this path into the Academy with teaching students and helping them to find their calling and purpose. If I had not done a study on learning about finding the will of God, I do not believe I would have gone on to Seminary and be in the teaching position I am today. I have discovered that we are called to be lifelong learners conforming to the image of Jesus. The more I have learned, the more I realize how much I do not know – but I can study and seek it out!
